Gerhard du Toit isn’t just leading oncology research at IQVIA Biotech, he’s helping shape the way treatments are developed and delivered. As Global Head of Oncology, he is responsible for leading all aspects of oncology clinical trials, optimizing strategies and ensuring seamless execution from early to late-phase development.
With nearly three decades of experience in project, clinical and data management spanning across 56 countries, Gerhard has built a career on a simple but powerful principle: innovation should always serve the patient. His dedication to innovation and operational excellence has made him a key figure in advancing global oncology drug development.
From South Africa to global impact
Gerhard’s career began in Bloemfontein, South Africa, where he worked for a non-profit organization and developed a deep appreciation for the global nature of clinical research. With a background in mathematical statistics, he entered the industry at a time when companies were expanding their search for talent beyond established biotech and pharmaceutical hubs. That opportunity launched him into a dynamic career spanning multiple regions and disciplines.
Over the years, he has worn many hats-data management, statistical analysis, clinical monitoring, and business development-but his true calling lies in project management. For the past 17 years, he has focused on making clinical trials more efficient, ethical, and patient-focused. Before joining IQVIA Biotech, he led a team of 1,200 professionals at a global clinical research organization, further cementing his leadership.
Making clinical trials more patient-focused
Gerhard is committed to putting patients at the center of clinical research. Growing up in a diverse country like South Africa, he understands the complexities of ensuring equal access to medical advancements. Under his leadership, IQVIA Biotech has implemented strategies to increase patient engagement, making it easier for people-especially those who might not have traditionally been included-to participate in clinical trials.
One of his proudest career moments? Being part of a life-changing drug approval for a rare patient population. For him, success in this field is all about collaboration-whether with patients, researchers, or industry leaders-because only by working together can breakthroughs happen.
Navigating industry challenges and opportunities
The pharmaceutical industry is under increasing financial stress, but Gerhard remains optimistic about the future-especially in biotech. The number of new oncology treatments in development is at an all-time high, and scientific advancements are reshaping what’s possible.
One of the biggest changes he’s witnessed is the speed of clinical trials. Technology has changed the way data is collected, analyzed, and shared, making drug development more efficient. While this accelerated pace comes with added pressure, it also creates new opportunities for innovation.
Looking ahead, Gerhard believes patient-generated data will play an even bigger role in research, leading to more personalized and accessible treatment options-regardless of geography or economic status.
Life outside the office
When he’s not leading oncology research, Gerhard is an avid sports fan-especially when it comes to Rugby Union. As a devoted supporter of the South African national team, the Springboks, he admires their strength, skill, and ability to unite a nation through sport. He also has a passion for architecture, drawn to the balance of form and function in great design.
An advocate for an active lifestyle, he and his family enjoy running, hiking, and surfing. His three daughters keep him motivated, often challenging him to 10K or even 20K runs, pushing him to stay physically fit. He also values mindfulness and staying present, recognizing that success isn’t just about professional achievements but also about balance and well-being.
Advice for the next generation
For those entering the pharmaceutical industry, Gerhard emphasizes the importance of proactive career planning, continuous learning, and relationship-building. He encourages newcomers to embrace challenges, expand their networks, and celebrate successes, knowing that their contributions have the potential to impact millions of lives.
