With more than two decades of clinical research experience, Matt Simmons, Global Head of Oncology Strategy at IQVIA Biotech, is no stranger to supporting sponsors in successful drug development across all phases, from pre-clinical to post-marketing. Leading the global oncology strategy team, Matt is responsible for developing and overseeing collaboration between cross-functional teams to drive development plans forward for customers. With particular attention on supporting customers early in the process, Matt focuses on understanding their needs to build clinical trial strategies that deliver on their expectations with quality. Through early engagement, Matt can discuss strategic options, identifying potential challenges and guiding customers through the recommended steps to get them where they aim to be with their valued asset.

Beginning his career in clinical research with established pharmaceutical companies, focused on oncology and CNS, Matt secured a strong understanding of the sponsor perspective and challenges when developing oncology treatments. Soon after transitioning to the clinical research organization side of the industry, he supported smaller pharmaceutical companies that required attention and consultation for strategic development plans for early phase research across varying indications, leading proposal and contract management and more.

Experiencing the significance of clinical research in oncology with varying sponsor types, sizes and resource levels, Matt gained a unique view of the value of a robust strategy while leading a large drug development unit in the U.K. Witnessing firsthand how trial participation can provide patients in need with viable options was powerful and showed him that moving the needle, however small or big, can make a genuine impact in patient care and drug development.

In working with the IQVIA Biotech global oncology strategy team, Matt understands it is critical to listen actively to each customer in terms of their needs and goals to be able to customize guidance on how to optimize their development plans. Each day is an exciting new challenge to ensure each customer is confident in the team’s expertise, capabilities, and solutions to drive their plan forward successfully.

Seeing research as an integral part of clinical care, Matt also finds it important to help spark an interest in clinical research careers among future generations as a STEM advocate and volunteer at local schools near his home in the U.K.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology with Industrial Experience from the University of Manchester.
